Active learning

Welcome to Love Mondays, a weekly newsletter designed as a 3-minute hit to fire up the other 10,077 minutes of your week.

Active Learning

When is the last time you did something for the first time? So often we take the road most travelled when it comes to learning, although most of us would prefer to head off the beaten track when we go exploring the world (one day soon). However what we miss are the active learning opportunities in our own backyards (neighbourhoods, daily routines).

What do you do today that you did the same way 10 years ago?

Write down an old, die-hard routine.

Consider: whether this routine could be modified, optimised, or disrupted altogether?

Practice: actively learning new ways to get to the desired outcome

Decide to: reset the routine, based on a learning insight

The active learning state of mind: don’t learn to do, do to learn

Active learning is any learning activity in which we participate or interact with the learning process, as opposed to passively taking in the information. We tend to perform better in this ‘doing’ state. Active learning nurtures the brain, giving it an extended opportunity to connect new and old information, correct previous misconceptions, and reconsider existing thoughts or opinions. When you want to change the outcome, do you consider the action, or delve deeper into the underlying assumption?
