Looking back on your journey, who are the people who have played a significant role in shaping it so far? Be it a teacher, parent, friend, coach or boss (maybe even a mix of them all!), we all need supportive people around us who can encourage, challenge, empower and/or advise us.
I owe much of who I am and where I am today to my valued mentors. But how do
you find a mentor that’s right for you? I recently sat down with leadership coach and founder of be. Coaching, Leigh Morrison, to explore just that. (You can catch the full conversation on Disrupt Radio - check out the 4 pm, October 20 episode).
Here are four quick tips for your mentor-hunt:
- 1. Plot your learning adventure: In our quest for a mentor, you aren't merely seeking guidance; you’re on a quest for learning. So, what skills do you want to sharpen? What knowledge are you hungry to acquire? Be clear on your ‘why’ first.
- 2. Seek seasoned guides: Think of it as searching for a guide who's been there, done that. Look for mentors with hands-on experience or a deep well of knowledge in the specific realms that relate to your ‘why’.
- 3. Start with a coffee conversation: Take the fear out of starting by initiating your mentorship journey with a casual coffee conversation. See how the dynamic of that conversation goes before you make it a regular thing- in other words, don’t put the ‘mentor’ cart before the coffee horse.
- 4. Look for red flags: These are the
little signals that you may not have found the right fit for you. Your gut will tell you if it’s right but things like a potential mentor doing all the talking or not asking questions are the types of things to pay attention to. These red flags could signal a mismatch in communication styles or values - which is fine, get straight back to step 3 and instigate another coffee conversation with someone else.
We all need a network of good people around us to support us to achieve anything significant, mentorship is one way to do that. Just think, the right mentor might only be a coffee chat away
